Haneef mediation talks end successfully
Lawyers acting for wrongfully arrested and detained
Dr Mohamed Haneef have today settled his claim for
compensation.
Maurice Blackburn Principal Rod Hodgson said: "I am
delighted to announce that Maurice Blackburn, on behalf of Dr
Haneef, has settled the mediation with the Federal Government over
his wrongful detention in 2007. Part of the agreement is that the
parties do not discuss the details of this settlement, although I
can say that Dr Haneef will receive substantial compensation.
"Today's momentous outcome has been a long time
coming for Dr Haneef.
"This mediation closes the book on an incident that
was a stain on Australia's reputation as a fair place to live and
work.
"The discussions held over the last two days
between the Australian Government and Dr Haneef reached a fair
outcome that recognises the injustice that Dr Haneef
suffered.
Dr Haneef was an innocent man who suffered a
terrible injustice when he was wrongfully detained and charged with
a terrorism-related offence.
Those actions dramatically affected Dr Haneef's
family, his career, his life, his time in Australia, and his
reputation.
The events did not occur on the watch of the
current Federal Government. This Government set up the Clarke
Inquiry and acted upon its findings.
I sincerely congratulate the current Federal
Government for being able to recognise this past injustice and act
to rectify it. It would have been a tragedy to prolong this.
Everybody who participated in this mediation over
the last few days did so in good faith, and I want to in particular
thank our mediator Mr Tony Fitzgerald QC.
The terms of the settlement including the amount of
compensation are confidential."
Commending on the settlement, Dr Mohamed Haneef
said:
"My wrongful arrest and detention in 2007 was very
traumatic, and today's settlement is a chance to end that part of
my life and move on with my family.
"I would like to thank my lawyers and the people in
Australia who have supported me over the past three years. All of
you have been a great source of strength for my family."
